Chargers | Could be big spenders in free agency

The San Diego Chargers currently have between $10-15 million of cap space to work with this offseason. They will also likely clear the books of $10 million by waiving OT Marcus McNeill. The team is also expected to release or seek to renegotiate the contract of DL Luis A. Castillo, who is due $4.975 million in 2012. Releasing Castillo would clear all but $1.025 million of his $6 million cap number.

Chargers | Vincent Jackson unlikely to return

There does not appear to be any way San Diego Chargers impending free-agent WR Vincent Jackson returns to the team in 2012. The team will not place the franchise tag on Jackson, and there will be too much interest in Jackson from teams around the NFL.

San Diego Chargers OG Kris Dielman (concussion) is leaning toward returning after suffering a scary concussion in 2011, according to those close to him and team sources. If he elects to retire, his possible departure would free up $5.5 million in salary cap space, although that's money the team will happily pay to keep Dielman.

Chargers | Darrell Stuckey might see bigger roll

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner said Tuesday, Feb. 7, that he expects FS Darrell Stuckey to compete for playing time on defense in 2012. He also said he would like to see Stuckey take that next step on special teams, a role he excelled in 2011. "He's got great acceleration and he showed this year he's very competitive as a player," Turner said. "I would love to see him be a guy that evolves into a Pro Bowl special teams player, but I do believe he's a guy that's going to be a very good player for us in the secondary and I'm anxious for him to take that next step."

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers said the team needs to cut down on the mistakes and play a little better but are not far off from a trip to the playoffs again. "A lot of times, you look at 8-8 or 9-7 and you get too caught up in what's wrong instead of, 'Let's just play a little better and fine-tune some things,' " Rivers said. "Because the difference in an 8-8 or a 9-7 team to that 11-5, 12-4 team is not a whole lot."

San Diego Chargers impending free-agent WR Vincent Jackson said that he would like to sign a long-term deal with the team. "I would like to stay in San Diego. Obviously, that's my home, that's where I was drafted," Jackson said. "I've got some good guys around me – Philip Rivers (Antonio) Gates, Ryan Mathews. It would be a great place for me to stay, so we'll see if that works out." Jackson, however, added he would rather not receive the franchise tag again.
